Report: Yeshiva attack aimed at top rabbi

Published: March 14, 2008 at 11:26 AM
JERUSALEM , March 14 (UPI) -- A recent terrorist attack at a yeshiva in Jerusalem that killed eight failed in its aim to kill a chief rabbi, the Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar said Friday.

It is suspected that once the alleged attacker, Ala Abu-Dheim, failed to shoot a head rabbi, he instead decided to shoot students in the library, Ynetnews reported.

"The group behind the attack wanted to declare that it succeeded in killing the rabbi, but reconsidered this declaration after the shooter, Ala Abu-Dheim, did not manage to kill him," a source said of the March 8 incident.

The attacker reportedly managed to kill eight students before and an Israeli officer shot and killed him.

Top Hamas leaders are planning to follow the yeshiva attack with similar attacks while backing off rocket and missile firing from Gaza, DEBKAfile, an Israeli Web site, reported.
