A Harris poll found that compared to last year, 42 of respondents said their household's financial situation has worsened, while 35 percent of those polled said their household's finances improved.
About a quarter of respondents said their financial situation has remained about the same.
Those with higher incomes are more likely to view their household's finances favorably, the poll found.
Of those with a household income of $75,000 or more, 46 percent of respondents said their household's financial situation has improved, compared to 24 percent of those with an income of under $35,000.
When looking at their local economy, 49 percent of respondents said they were pessimistic, while 31 percent said they are optimistic. Twenty percent of respondents said they are neither.
The poll of 1,365 U.S. adults was conducted online Feb. 15-25. A margin of sampling error was not reported.
