Zimbabwe decries rumored U.K. cricket ban

Published: March 4, 2008 at 3:55 PM
HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 4 (UPI) -- Britain appeared to touch a nerve in Zimbabwe when it hinted it might ban the African nation's cricket team from a planned 2009 tour of the United Kingdom.

Zimbabwean Information Minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu told the BBC Tuesday that the potential ban would be "racist" at least and downright "madness" as well.

"I don't think the British government will sink so low as to implement that," Ndlovu said. "If they do, well, we are appealing to the world community to express their concern and urge the British to stop that madness."

The proposed ban is aimed at sanctioning the government of strongman Robert Mugabe and would likely spread to athletes in other sports as well.
