HONOLULU, March 4 (UPI) --
The U.S. military launched an investigation into a graphic video posted on YouTube that appears to show U.S. Marines in Iraq hurling a puppy off a cliff.
Officials at the Marine base in Kaneohe, Hawaii, announced in a written statement that the video "is shocking and contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine."
The Honolulu Advertiser said Tuesday the Marines said they believe the two individuals in the video were from a Hawaiian unit.
The video purportedly shows the pair holding the docile puppy by the scruff of the neck and pitching it into a gully where a yelp could be heard when it landed. The dog's fate wasn't known.
"That's mean," one person on the video says afterward.
A lot of people apparently agreed as the clip was soundly condemned on the Web and was aired nationwide on morning television news shows.
