Man may be charged for killing soccer fan

AREZZO, Italy, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- A police officer who fatally shot a soccer fan, a death that prompted riots in Italy, may be charged with murder, officials said.
Agent Luigi Spaccatorella, 35, said he did not intend to kill Lazio soccer fan and Rome DJ Gabriele Sandri, 26, when his gun fired accidentally, ANSA reported Friday.
After a preliminary investigation into the November 2007 incident, prosecutors reportedly said they would attempt to indict Spaccatorella on charges of murder.
Spaccatorella reportedly claimed he was trying to get a better view of what he thought was a petrol station robbery when his gun fired. Sandri and his friends were reportedly driving off after getting into a scuffle with fans from the opposing team.
The death of Sandri sparked the most severe soccer riots the country experienced in years and caused soccer play to be suspended for a day, the report said.
