BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- An officer from Argentina's former military dictatorship set to testify in a controversial trial was found dead of a gunshot to the head Tuesday near his home.

Former Lt. Col. Paul Navone was found dead in a park near his home in the central Argentine city of Cordoba, La Nacion reported.

Navone was supposed to testify in a case involving the abduction of about 200 newborn children from political prisoners during the dictatorship that spawned what is generally called the "Dirty War" (1976-1983).

An estimated 30,000 people were killed or disappeared during the dictatorship.

Some officials speculated Navone was killed to prevent his testimony, while others said he committed suicide ahead of his trial date. An investigation was pending.
