TORONTO, Feb. 25 (UPI) --
A 38-year-old Toronto woman faced court Monday, charged with the second-degree murder of her 40-day-old infant in the family home.
Paramedics responded to a 911 emergency call Sunday night about a "baby not breathing," Toronto Police homicide Detective-Sgt. Gary Grinton told the Toronto Sun.
"The child was presumed dead by the ambulance because she was cold," Grinton said.
Xiu Zheng was charged at the scene and held in custody overnight pending her first court appearance, Grinton said.
Police wouldn't reveal the baby's gender or any suspected cause of death, saying results would be released after an autopsy later Monday.
The woman's husband and two daughters, ages 4 and 11, were in the rented home at the time, Grinton said. He told reporters the father was holding up "as well as can be expected under the circumstances -- which is not particularly well, actually."
The family had no previous contacts with the police, he said.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
