JERUSALEM, Feb. 24 (UPI) --
Israeli officials are discussing how best to react to a planned protest in the Gaza Strip where an estimated 40,000 Palestinians will create a human chain.
Haaretz said top Israeli officials would meet Sunday night to create a reaction plan for the demonstration against the economic embargo imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip.
Organizers of Monday's protest have already promised to keep the tens of thousands of demonstrators from clashing with Israeli forces. The protesters plan to create a human chain by linking hands and then march along the border.
Israeli military forces are already in place along the border as a precaution. Haaretz cited a source in Jerusalem who said force may be used to end the protest if deemed necessary.
Plans for the protest came about after the Gaza Strip was hit with a major gasoline shortage due to Israel's imposed embargo, the Israeli newspaper said.
The protest also comes as Israeli fears for a Hamas attack are increasing, with some officials suspecting the militant group will attempt to garner global attention through a major action.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
