DR Congo mulls cease-fire agreement

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- The Democratic Republic of Congo government and rebel forces were poised Tuesday to sign a cease-fire agreement in the northern city of Goma.

The city is the capital of North Kivu province, where rebels loyal to renegade Gen. Laurent Nkunda and various splinter groups have battled government forces for months, driving almost half a million people from their homes.

The agreement calls for an immediate cease-fire. It also would establish a commission to oversee the disarmament of rebel fighters so they would either be integrated into the national army or demobilized, Voice of America reported.

The BBC reported the deal gives amnesty to all fighting groups, but it wasn't clear what would happen to Nkunda.

Both Kabila and Nkunda are in Goma, but neither has attended the talks personally, the report said.
