SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Bosnian prosecutors have opened inquiries against 42 people on suspicion of helping Serbian war crime fugitives.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina Prosecution Office said Tuesday investigations were in initial stages but prosecutors said they have obtained substantial evidence against aides of the four major fugitives, sought by the U.N. war crimes tribunal in the Netherlands, the Serbian news agency Tanjug reported.

The four men still on the run included former Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic and his former military chief Ratko Mladic, sought on genocide and crimes against humanity charges regarding events in the 1991-95 ethnic wars against Muslims and Croats in the former Yugoslavia.

The Hague tribunal in the Netherlands is seeking former Croatian Serb leader Goran Hadzic and former Bosnian Serb police chief Stojan Zupljanin on war crimes charges.

The 42 aides who are suspects include former high-ranking Serb officials and family members of the four fugitives.
