While already the target of sweatshop allegations, labor rights groups say those Chinese employers are still mistreating their workers through low pay and dangerous working conditions, The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) reported Saturday.
"If these things are so dangerous for the consumer, then how about the workers?" labor rights advocate Anita Chan said. "We may be dealing with these things for a short time, but they deal with them every day."
Among the companies tied to the alleged sweatshop companies in 2007 were Dell, Disney and Wal-Mart.
Each of the companies had products produced in China and shipped overseas, with Wal-Mart leading the charge with an estimated $6 billion in goods imported from China in 2006 alone.
The Times said that while the companies are being audited to ensure they follow regulations, the system in place has been labeled as flawed by several companies.
