"It just happened so fast. It certainly ruins your day," State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata told the San Francisco Chronicle after Saturday's attack.
Perata, 62, was stopped at a red light in his state-leased 2006 Dodge Charger when a man walked toward the car while pulling a mask over his face, drew a gun and ordered him out of the car, the Chronicle said.
The gunman drove off, followed by an apparent accomplice in a 2000 Chevrolet Camaro reported stolen earlier in the day, police said.
Perata's car may have been targeted for its 22-inch rims, police said.
"My next car will be something that doesn't attract so much attention," Perata told the Oakland (Calif.) Tribune.
