LAKE ELSINORE, Calif., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A Lake Elsinore, Calif., woman has been arrested on suspicion of providing nitrous oxide to her teenage son and his friends to use as laughing gas.

Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Evan Petersen said the home of Maria Antonia Mendez, 28, was searched after a school resource officer reported repeated absences of a group of students, the Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.

Peterson said the students, including Mendez's 13-year-old son, were missing school to hang out at Mendez's home, where investigators found two canisters of nitrous oxide and balloons.

Laughing gas users fill balloons with nitrous oxide and inhale the gas from the balloons, causing the users to get high. Police said they believe Mendez and the children were inhaling the gas.

Mendez is suspected of multiple counts of child endangerment and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Her bail was set at $90,000.
