OAKLAND, Calif., Dec. 12 (UPI) --
Authorities in Oakland, Calif., have arrested a mother and her son after the pair allegedly coordinated an armed carjacking.
Sgt. Drennon Lindsey alleged that 40-year-old Cecilia Rupley gave her 17-year-old son permission to brandish a knife and steal a local woman's sport utility vehicle, before the familial pair escaped in the stolen vehicle, the Oakland (Calif.) Tribune reported Wednesday.
"It's a vicious cycle,'' the Oakland police official said. "These kids are looking for direction and in this case the direction was to jail.''
Lindsey alleged that after police caught up with the mother-son duo in the stolen car, they both confessed to taking part in the crime.
Police told the Tribune the victim's cell phone and car keys were allegedly found in the pair's possession, but the wallet taken from the woman during Monday's crime was missing.
While Rupley and her son now face armed carjacking and possession of stolen property charges, the mother is also facing a child endangerment charge for allegedly involving her son.
