AJAX, Ontario, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old Toronto-area boy who legally bought a car and crashed it at high speed, killing two teenage friends, is facing criminal charges.

Police in Ajax, 21 miles east of Toronto, said the boy picked up two friends from a Muslim boarding school Sunday morning and soon after crashed the car at high speed. A 15-year-old boy was thrown from the vehicle and killed as it rolled three times.

A second 15-year-old was also declared dead at the scene, while the driver sustained non-life threatening injuries, the Globe and Mail reported from Toronto.

Detective David Cormack of Durham Regional Police said the youth had been charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death but said there was nothing illegal about a 14-year-old buying a car.

Cormack said police had learned from friends at the school, where the boy was a non-resident day student, he had paid $500 for the early 1990s Mazda MX-6 last week.

Cormack said investigators were looking into the sale of the car.

"Parents have to be parents, they have to be aware of what their kids are doing," he said. "As a father, how can you not be aware of what your 14-year-old kid is doing?"
