Americans estranged with Bush, poll shows

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- The "Alienation Index" in a recent Harris Poll indicated the highest level of disaffection for George Bush in the seven years he has been U.S. president.

The poll shows the index for Bush increased from 54 points in 2006 to 56 in the most recent poll -- the highest level in his presidency.

The Harris Poll's "Alienation Index" began examining American's sentiment toward the president by asking the same five questions during the same time of almost every year since 1966.

The poll of 1,052 adults ranked what they considered Washington's concern for U.S. citizens, perceptions of abuse of power and whether leaders are in touch with the rest of the country, a release by Harris said Friday.

The index signaled a greater disaffection with Bush than President Richard Nixon's during the Watergate-era term but it was not the highest level recorded. That honor goes to President Bill Clinton who scored a 67 in 1995. Lyndon Johnson had the lowest score of 29 in 1966.
