ESCONDIDO, Calif., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A crime spree in Escondido, Calif., resulted in the disappearance of nine exotic birds worth thousands of dollars, area police said.
Police said that during the last few months, nine exotic birds have been stolen from homes in Escondido by an unidentified thief and another bird was reportedly taken from a home in the nearby city of San Marcos, the San Diego Union-Tribune said.
One of the victims said a woman grabbed her prized macaw off her porch right in front of her Oct. 18 and escaped in a pickup truck driven by an unidentified male suspect.
That reported description of the two suspects was supported by another victim, who said the pair is Latino and drove a pickup with a cracked windshield.
The Union-Tribune said that exotic bird thefts have become increasingly prevalent in California as such rare animals can be worth thousands of dollars each to collectors or breeders.
