Lab monkeys recaptured after accident

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Officials managed to recapture 53 lab monkeys that temporarily escaped after the truck carrying them was involved in a traffic accident in Ohio.

While local officials initially had been concerned that the escaped monkeys could pose a health risk, authorities in Belmont County never issued a warning following the monkeys' temporary exodus from custody last week, Cleveland's WEWS-TV reported.

The lab monkeys were able to run free near an Interstate 71 exit ramp last Thursday after the truck carrying them hit a minivan and rolled down a nearby hill.

The driver of the minivan was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, while the truck driver was not injured.

Thanks to the combined efforts of area police and zookeepers from West Virginia's Oglebay Good Zoo, all of the monkeys were eventually recaptured.

WEWS-TV said the monkeys had been on their way to a Maryland lab after being flown into the United States from an unspecified location.
