LONDON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Christians have a duty to donate their organs just as they should give freely of themselves and their possessions, the Church of England says.

The church said body parts should be used reverently to heal others and not be considered the person themselves, the BBC reported Monday.

The church said it would welcome the creation of a European donor pool, which is being considered by the European Union. However, church officials said they would not take a position on whether such a pool would be an opt-out system in which everyone is considered a donor unless they designate otherwise, or an opt-in system, in which people must state their desire to be a donor, the BBC said.

Britain is considering switching from an opt-in to an opt-out system because of a chronic organ shortage.
