Alleged Sudanese bombing kills 25

KHARTOUM, Sudan, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A rebel leader claims the Sudanese government has bombed a town in Darfur, killing at least 28 people.

Justice and Equality Movement official Abdel Aziz said the aerial attack resulted in at least 25 civilian and three military deaths in Haskinita, the BBC reported Monday.

Aziz said the bombings began Monday afternoon and were followed by Sudanese ground forces entering the rebel-controlled town. Most of the town’s inhabitants fled, he said.

The move by Sudan came just weeks before peace talks between rebel leaders and officials from Sudan's capital, Khartoum, were supposed to begin. The BBC said some fear the continued fighting could derail the negotiations before they have even started.

At least 200,000 people are believed to have died in Darfur in the past four years, while more than 2 million have fled their homes.
