Earthquake shakes Santa Ana mountains

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- A 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook California's Santa Ana Mountains, sending shock waves that were felt all the way to San Diego and Los Angeles counties.

The Sunday quake erupted beneath the mountains while geologist Eldon Gath was working on the last chapter of his doctoral dissertation on seismic activity, The Orange County Register reported.

“It’s been a fairly quiet mountain, but we don’t know whether that’s because something is building up,” says Gath, who was recently hired to helped design an expansion of the Panama Canal.

When asked if the quake could be a precursor to a larger event, Gath said: “This is always the $20 question, and the answer is always the same: of course. But with some significant caveats.”

“There is a much larger earthquake to come on any of these (Southern California) fault systems. But unless it comes in the next few days, then this will simply have been a minor event and, unfortunately, soon forgotten,” he said.
