The Salt Creek fire on the outskirts of Fountain Green was about 15 percent contained after burning more than 18,500 acres, and firefighters were praying for additional rain Monday to help slow its spread.
Fountain Green remained under an evacuation order while Sanpete County officials were closing additional roads in the rural area in anticipation the blaze would spread, the Salt Lake City Deseret Morning News said Monday.
Rain in the county fell Sunday as monsoon moisture pumped up the humidity over large areas of the West. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise warned Monday conditions would likely increase the number of thunderstorms that could cause new lightning-caused fires.
Other major fires included the Murphy Complex in Idaho, which has burned nearly 568,000 acres and threatened parts of the Mountain Home Air Force Base training range, and the 193,000-acre Winecup complex near Elko, Nev., the Idaho Statesman reported.
