U.S. companies focus of pesticide trial

LOS ANGELES, July 20 (UPI) -- A trial is under way in Los Angeles, where a poor Latino laborers are suing two U.S. companies for allegedly knowingly exposing them to dangerous pesticides.

The suit claims Dole Food Co. knowingly exposed Nicaraguan banana workers in Nicaragua to pesticides produced by Dow Chemical Co. some three decades ago, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The chemicals have caused sterility in the men, Duane Miller, a Sacramento attorney who represents the workers, argued in court Thursday.

"The workers were not told that (the pesticide) may affect their fertility," Miller told jurors. "They weren't told until the '90s -- and they weren't told by Dow or Dole."

Dow attorneys argued that the companies used the chemical properly.
