Spain: Demonstrators decry bombing

Published: Dec. 31, 2006 at 7:14 PM
MADRID, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Thousands of protesters demonstrated Sunday throughout Spain against the weekend car-bomb attack at the Madrid airport, the news agency EFE reported.

The bombing -- which left two people missing and presumed dead and 19 injured -- allegedly was carried out by the Basque separatist group ETA at Madrid's main airport.

Spanish officials said they have decided to suspend peace talks with ETA in light of the attack.

For three decades, ETA militants have been fighting for a Basque homeland along the French-Spanish border. Their attacks have claimed some 850 lives.
