MERIDA, Mexico, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A retired Scottish engineer says spending two days in the open after getting lost and breaking an ankle near a Mayan site in Mexico's Yucatan was an adventure.

A police officer with a tracking dog found William Ditchburn, 70, on the day after Christmas, The Scotsman reported.

Ditchburn was separated from his guide and tour group on Christmas Eve when he sheltered from the rain under a tree at around 5 p.m. He apparently took a wrong turn and ended up in the jungle.

"The first day I had to put up with the bad weather, I sheltered from the rain under the trees," Ditchburn told Diario de Yucatan. "I even forgot it was Christmas. I had to hide myself from the rain and wind and find a way of getting out. After a few hours I realized I was walking in circles, then I fractured my leg and couldn't do anymore."

By the time he was found, Ditchburn was unable to walk.

Ditchburn said he had a wonderful time in the Yucatan and hopes to return there when his ankle heals. But he now plans to return home once he is out of the hospital, giving up a trip to Guatemala.
