Housework may help men live longer

Published: June 14, 2006 at 9:04 PM
SYDNEY, June 14 (UPI) -- A new study suggests men would live longer if they did more housework and helped out more with their children.

The Victoria University study, Killing Time, found that although men had

more leisure time than women, they did not spend it engaged in

"meaningful activity" and might literally die of boredom, the Syndey Morning Herald reported.

Most of the men surveyed for the study said they were sometimes bored or lonely during their free time. Researchers said there is a strong correlation between these emotions and mortality risk.

"There's an argument that it might be worthwhile (for) men to exchange

some of their leisure time for a higher participation in unpaid work," Leonie Bloomfield, the psychologist in charge of the study, told the newspaper. "Some of (their) time could be spent engaged in domestic work or increasing their participation in child care."
