BERLIN, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Germany announced Thursday it would increase aid to the victims of the tsunami disaster in South Asia to $27 million (20 million euros).

"We will use all of our resources to be of assistance there," German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder said in Berlin.

The death toll from Sunday's earthquake and tsunami Thursday rose to 123,000 across 11 countries. Germany has identified 26 dead among the 1,000 German citizens still missing.

"This is a catastrophe of truly worldwide proportions," Schroder said. "It can only truly be solved through close cooperation by the international community, coordinated through the United Nations."

Schroder and Foreign Minister Joschka Fisher announced Germany's aid would increase from $2.7 million (2 million euros) which was announced Tuesday to $27 million.

They also said they would propose a debt moratorium for Indonesia and Somalia at the January Paris Club meeting.

Germany has already sent military aircraft to Thailand to treat the injured and transport tourists.
