Chicago Bulls get top pick in NBA draft

SECAUCUS, N.J., May 20 (UPI) -- The Chicago Bulls, who had just a 1.7 percent chance of landing the top pick, Tuesday won the No. 1 selection for the June 26 NBA draft.

The Bulls, who finished 33-49 last season, had just 17 ping pong balls out of 1,000 in the lottery system. It will be their first No. 1 overall pick since selecting Elton Brand in 1999.

Miami, which had the league's worst mark at 15-67 and had a 25 percent chance of landing the top pick, will select second, followed by Minnesota, Seattle and Memphis.

Falcons sign QB Ryan to six-year deal

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga., May 20 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Falcons signed former Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, their first-round draft choice, to a six-year contract Tuesday.

Financial details of the contract were not disclosed. Ryan was the third overall selection in the 2008 NFL draft.

Boston College finished eighth in the nation in total offense last year when Ryan established school records for 400-yard passing performances in both a career and a season. He totaled 4,507 passing yards last season.

Ryan completed 807 of 1,347 passes for 9,313 yards and 56 touchdowns in his college career. His career completions and attempts set school records, while his passing yards and 59.9 completion percentage both rank third in the school's all-time record book.

Ryan won 76.5 percent of his 34 college starts while posting a 3-0 record in bowl games.

Americans, Argentines split at World Team

DUSSELDORF, Germany, May 20 (UPI) -- James Blake won and Wayne Odesnik lost Tuesday when the United States split singles with Argentina at the $2.34 million World Team Championship.

A doubles match Wednesday will decide if the United States improves to 2-0 in the four-nation Red Group or the Argentines go 1-1.

Argentina beat the Czech Republic in last year's World Team finale, while the United States hasn't won this event since 1993.

Sweden is 2-0 in the Red Group, while the Czechs dropped to 0-2, as Robin Soderling beat Tomas Berdych 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, and 2002 Australian Open runner-up Thomas Johansson defeated Michal Tabara 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).
