DUSSELDORF, Germany, May 19 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick, ranked No. 6 in the world, has withdrawn from the French Open because of an ailing back and shoulder.

Roddick's brother, John, made the announcement at the start of a World Team Cup tournament in Germany. John Roddick is the U.S. team captain.

Roddick was injured during the Italian Masters and retired during the first set of a May 10 semifinal match against Stanislas Wawrinka.

Roddick owns a U.S. Open title -- from 2003 -- but hasn't had much success at the French Open. He was beaten in the first round each of the last two years and advanced as far as the third round just once -- his initial French Open in 2001.

The 2008 French Open is to begin Sunday and conclude with the men's singles title match June 8.
