NEW YORK, May 19 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs' Alfonso Soriano, who had seven home runs and 14 runs batted in last week, is the National League player of the week.

NL officials said Monday Soriano was honored for his play in games May 12-18, a period in which he hit .516 with 16 hits, 10 runs and major-league bests in home runs and RBI. He led off the Cubs' game last Tuesday with a home run, moving him to third all time with 45 lead-off homers.

He had six multi-hit games in winning his second NL player of the week award. He was also honored June 24, 2007. Soriano won the AL weekly honor four times.

Among the other players considered for this week's NL player award were Soriano teammates Mark DeRosa and Ryan Dempster.
