Diamondbacks pitcher is cancer-free

PHOENIX, May 9 (UPI) -- Results from a CT scan indicate that Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Doug Davis is cancer free, team doctors said.

The veteran left-hander was diagnosed with thyroid cancer on March 27 and doctors told him that he will have to live without the thyroid and take hormones every day for the rest of his life.

Davis underwent four hours of surgery on April 10.

His latest medical procedure was Thursday morning and has been ingesting pills to combat possible side effects from radiation.

"The cancer did not spread and it will not spread from here on out," he said on the Diamondbacks' Web site. "I didn't notice anything (after taking the pill)."

On Saturday, Davis will make the first of two rehabilitation starts at Triple-A Tucson.

After those stints, the Diamondbacks will assess his ability to return to the majors.

In two starts this season, Davis is 1-1 with eight walks, 11 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.72.
