MINNEAPOLIS, May 7 (UPI) -- Former Minnesota Vikings lineman Darrion Scott faces child abuse charges for allegedly assaulting his 2-year-old son.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune Wednesday said Scott, 26, is charged with felony assault in the third degree, felony domestic assault by strangulation and misdemeanor endangerment of a child.

The charges were contained in a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court following an incident at Scott's Eden Prairie, Minn., residence April 26.

The 6-foot-3, 290-pounder, the team sacks leader in 2006, allegedly held a plastic dry cleaning bag over the boy's head while he was on his back on the floor, kicking and crying.

Scott's agent, Tim DiPiero, told the newspaper the arrest "a mistake" and said Scott would seek a speedy trial to "prove his innocence."

A search turned up a loaded .50-caliber handgun in an unlocked bedroom nightstand.
