Anthony Kim claims first PGA Tour victory

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 4 (UPI) -- Anthony Kim closed with a 3-under-par 69 Sunday and won the Wachovia Championship in North Carolina by five shots -- his first victory on the PGA Tour.

The 22-year-old Kim finished at 16-under 272 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte.

"It's been a wonderful week. I have to thank everybody who helped me get to where I am right now," Kim said. "It's been a long ride, but it sure is worth it."

Kim collected $1,152,000.

Ben Curtis shot a final-round 65 for second-place at 11-under 277 and Jason Bohn carded 71 to take third, another shot back.

Beijing Olympic torch relay begins

SANYA, China, May 4 (UPI) -- Olympic short track speed skating gold medalist Yang Yang said she was excited to begin the Beijing Olympic torch relay in China Sunday.

Yang stepped up as the first torch carrier at the Fire Phoenix Square on Phoenix Island Sunday morning, Xinhua reported.

"I felt both excited and nervous to be the first torchbearer in the Chinese mainland," she said.

Yang took home two gold medals in women's short track speed skating at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games in 2002.

It is reported 208 people will carry the torch to Tianya Haijiao, past the Crown of Beauty Center, Haiyue Square of Sanya Gulf and Haihong Square.

The torch is scheduled travel to Wuzhishan city Monday and Hainan Province capital, Haikou, Tuesday.

Nadal beats Ferrer in Barcelona final

BARCELONA, Spain, May 4 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal banged out a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory against David Ferrer Sunday to capture the Open Sabadell Atlantico tennis tournament in Barcelona, Spain.

The clay court specialist won the all-Spanish final for the fourth straight year after Ferrer converted two critical break points to take the second set.

Nadal recovered in the third by recording two service breaks and winning 13 points more than Ferrer.

"The first set I played very well, almost perfect," the top-seeded Nadal said. "He was very strong in the second set and I am just very happy to have won here again."

Nadal's 25th career tournament crown on the men's tennis tour and his second this season was worth $210,000.

Ferrer, the second seed, failed in his bid for a seventh career crown and fell to 3-6 lifetime against his better known countryman.

Paula Creamer wins in Oklahoma

BROKEN ARROW, Okla., May 4 (UPI) -- Paula Creamer rolled in an 8-foot birdie putt to defeat Juli Inkster in a playoff and win the SemGroup Championship Sunday in Broken Arrow, Okla.

World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa tied for fifth-place, ending her string of four straight tour victories.

Creamer's win, on the second playoff hole, was her sixth on the LPGA Tour.

Creamer shot a final-found 72 and Inkster had a 70, capped by a birdie on the final hole, to finish regulation play in 2-under-par 272.

"We have to have a little chat my putter and I, that's for sure," Creamer said after some unsteady putting in the final round.

"Jules (Inkster), what can I say? She definitely made me win it. It was some interesting golf out there. It was a good two-hole playoff.

Jeong Jang (68) and Angela Stanford (71) tied for third at 2-over 268.

Ochoa closed with a 69 and ended up 3-over-par with Dorothy Delasin and Brittany Lang.
