LOS ANGELES, March 29 (UPI) -- Rudy Gay scored 28 points Friday and the Memphis Grizzlies held on for an unlikely 114-111 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Memphis won on the road for just the sixth time all season against a team that could have moved into a tie for the Western Conference lead had it picked up the victory. The Grizzlies overcame a 53-point performance by Kobe Bryant, who made 19 of 37 shots.

The Lakers continued to play without Pau Gasol, who is sidelined with a sprained ankle.

The Grizzlies broke open a tie game at halftime by running out to a nine-point advantage through three quarters.

Los Angeles moved within two points when Ronny Turiaf made a layup with eight seconds to go. Gay was then fouled and he made one of two free throws with a second to play.

Needing a desperation three-pointer to tie, the Lakers fumbled away the inbound pass.

Los Angeles made 15 three-pointers, one shy of the team record. Nine of them came from Bryant.
