MARTINSVILLE, Va., March 28 (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon drove his Chevrolet Friday to the pole position for Sunday's Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville, Va.

At a speed of 96.288 miles per hour, Gordon, in his No.24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy, captured his second pole this season, his seventh at Martinsville and the 65th of his Sprint Cup career.

He needs five more pole wins to overtake Cale Yarborough for third all-time.

"That was two of the best corners I've probably ever put together all at one time," he said in a comment about the famed Martinsville Speedway. "You have got to be aggressive, but yet you can't overdo it ... that's a fine line ... you are right on the edge of it at all times."

Gordon will be joined on the front row by Denny Hamlin.

On row two will be Aric Almirola and David Ragan.

Kasey Kahne is sixth, points leader Kyle Busch eighth, Tony Stewart ninth and defending champion Jimmie Johnson 10th.
