PITTSBURGH, March 27 (UPI) -- Jarkko Ruutu scored a goal and assisted on two others Thursday in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders.

The Penguins vaulted past Montreal to take over first place in the Eastern Conference.

George Laraque and Evgeni Malkin also scored for Pittsburgh and Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves to pick up his 17th win of the season.

Pittsburgh welcomed back captain Sidney Crosby, who had missed 28 of the team's last 31 games with a sprained ankle. He had three shots on goal while playing 20 minutes.

The Penguins also increased their lead in the Atlantic Division to six points over New Jersey, which fell to the New York Rangers Thursday. Pittsburgh has not won a division title in 10 years.

Ruutu gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead with a shorthanded goal late in the second period.
