DETROIT, March 25 (UPI) --
All-Star third baseman Miguel Cabrera has signed a seven-year contract extension with the Detroit Tigers, the team said Tuesday.
The agreement, which the Detroit Free Press said was worth $153.2 million, keeps Cabrera, 24, with the Tigers through the 2015 season.
Cabrera and the Tigers avoided arbitration in January by agreeing to a one-year, $11.3 million deal. The Free Press said the new deal pushed his 2008 salary to $15 million and an average of $21 million in each of the following six seasons.
Detroit acquired Cabrera along with pitcher Dontrelle Willis in a trade with the Florida Marlins during the offseason, sending six prospects to Florida.
Cabrera hit .320 last season and posted career highs of 34 home runs and 199 runs batted in. Over his five-year career, he has hit .313 with 138 home runs and 523 RBI.
