Cubs and Sox may share U.S. Cellular Field

MESA, Ariz., March 8 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs plan to play at least part of a season at U.S. Cellular Field during the proposed reconstruction of historic Wrigley Field.

The $250 million upgrade hinges on selling Wrigley Field to the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney told reporters at the team's training camp in Arizona that since the authority already runs and operates U.S. Cellular Field, it's likely they would play part of a season on the South Side, where the Chicago White Sox play.

"Maybe we don't need to be out for a whole season," Kenney said. "Maybe construction would start (the) last day of the season, it would go through the off-season and maybe call it until June to get some major work done. Maybe you could phase it in over time."

Kenney said he had not approached Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf about the possibility of the Cubs playing at their venue.

"To be honest, the architects really drive this, because they talk about lead time on ordering steel, etc., and how this would all work," Kenney said.
