MUNICH, Germany, June 20 (UPI) -- U.S. golfer John Daly has withdrawn from this week's BMW International Open in Germany because "personal reasons" keep him from leaving the United States.

Daly had scratch marks on his cheeks when she showed up for the second round of the St. Jude Classic in Memphis two weeks ago. He issued a statement saying he had been a "victim of an assault by my wife," but his wife claimed Daly attacked her.

The couple has since agreed to split.

Daly Tuesday informed officials of the BMW International Open, which he won in 2001, that he couldn't leave the United States due to personal reasons.

"We are very sad that John won't be taking part, but we understand his decision," said tournament Director Marco Kaussler. "We hope that his private situation will resolve itself quickly and very much hope that he will be back taking part in the BMW International Open next year."

Daly is still committed, however, to play in next week's Buick Open, a PGA Tour stop in Michigan.
