BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 6 (UPI) --
Second-seed Russian Dinara Safina beat top-seed Swiss Martina Hingis in three sets Saturday to win the season-opening Australian Women's Hardcourts title.
Safina capitalized on Hingis' double fault in the final game to take the match, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, for her fifth career title.
It was Safina's first victory in three meetings with Hingis, who beat Safina twice in 2006.
Hingis, ranked seventh in women's tennis, heads into the Australian Open after a successful return to the game in 2006 following a three-year layoff to recover from foot and ankle injuries.
Safina collected $25,840 for winning at Gold Coast.© 2007 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
