GOLD COAST, Australia, Jan. 5 (UPI) --
Martina Hingis and Dinara Safina lived up to their top-seed billing and advanced to the finals of the Australian Women's Hardcourts tennis tournament.
Hingis, the No. 1 seed from Switzerland, moved out of the semifinals when Italian Tathiana Garbin retired with an illness after taking a 4-3 lead the first set.
Safina, a Russian seeded second, needed three sets to get past Israeli Shahar Peer. Peer took the first set and forced a tiebreaker in the second, but Safina lost just one point in the tiebreaker and then dropped just one game in the third set to advance.
Hingis, who will be seeking her 43rd career title, has beaten Safina both times they played.
The Australian Women's Hardcourts final is set for Saturday with the winner claiming $25,840.
