ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Golfing star Tiger Woods revealed on his 31st birthday that his wife, Elin Nordegren, is pregnant with their first child.

People magazine said that while celebrating his birthday Saturday, the famed golfer posted the announcement of his impending fatherhood and good fortune on his Web site.

"As some of you know, today is my 31st birthday. I'll spend it quietly with family and friends, but Elin and I have more exciting news to share: We are expecting our first child together this summer," he announced on the Internet.

Woods, who plans on starting his 2007 PGA Tour season with January's Buick Invitational, confessed that the news could only have been better if his father had not succumbed to cancer in May.

"Obviously, we couldn't be happier and our families are thrilled," he added in the post. "I have always wanted to be a dad. I just wish my father could be around to share the experience."

People said Woods intends to offer Nordegren support by taking the next few weeks off to spend time with her.
