The Los Angeles Times reported that Delp, who helped Spectacular Bid win both the derby and the Preakness Stakes in 1979, died Friday in Ellicott City, Md., after a long battle with cancer.
For his training efforts, Delp was elected to the horse racing world's hall of fame back in 2002, while experts have tabbed Spectacular Bid as one of the greatest race horses in history.
While training Spectacular Bid, Delp helped the horse win 26 of its 30 total starts, only finishing below third place once.
During his lengthy career, Delp trained 3,674 winners overall and helped horses garner training titles in New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.
The Times said Delp is survived by his wife, Regina; his sons, Doug, Gerald and Cleve; a daughter, Pajeen; and two grandchildren.
