SAN DIEGO, Dec. 31 (UPI) --
Tatum Bell ran for three touchdowns Saturday to help Denver beat the San Diego Chargers, 23-7.
Bell, who came up shy of 1,000 yards for the season, gained 52 yards on 17 carries while Ron Dayne added 64 yards on 13 carries. Jake Plummer was 8-for-14 for only 91 yards; strong safety John Lynch forced two fumbles on two sacks, and the entire defense made six sacks for the Broncos (13-3), who won the AFC West Division.
The Chargers, who were eliminated from the AFC playoff chase last week, lost starting quarterback Drew Brees to a right shoulder injury in the second quarter. In relief, Philip Rivers went 12-for-22 for 115 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.
LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, and Eric Parker made eight receptions for 87 yards for the Chargers (9-7), who finished the season with a two-game losing streak.© 2005 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
