NHL: NY Islanders 6, Pittsburgh 1

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Jason Blake matched a career high with four points Wednesday as the New York Islanders coasted to a 6-1 rout of Pittsburgh.
Also for the winners, Trent Hunter scored twice.
Blake gave the Islanders a quick lead with his 10th goal just 56 seconds into the contest, and they benefited from a fortunate bounce with 8:26 left in the first when Hunter took a pass from defenseman Adrian Aucoin and fired a shot that hit defenseman Dan Focht before getting behind Sebastien Caron.
Blake stuffed a rebound of his own shot past Caron just two seconds before the first intermission to give New York a three-goal advantage.
Garth Snow turned aside 21 shots for the Islanders, who extended their season-high winning streak to six games. Their last four wins came against the top three teams in the Eastern Conference.
Pittsburgh was trying to win consecutive games for just the third time this season.
