MEMPHIS, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Morgan Scalley returned a fumble 74 yards with 1:36 remaining Wednesday, finishing off Utah's 17-0 blanking of Southern Mississippi in the Liberty Bowl.

The Utah defensive back helped create his team's second straight shutout.

By improving to 10-2, the 25th-ranked Utes tied the 1994 school record for wins. They did not allow a point in their final 10 quarters.

In their final regular season game, the Utes blanked Brigham Young, 3-0, ending the Cougars' NCAA-record streak of 361 games without being shut out.

Brandon Warfield accounted for the game's only offensive touchdown with a five-yard run late in the second quarter.

Utah, clinging to a 7-0 lead, turned away Southern Mississippi on a fourth and two at the Utes' 10 with less than seven minutes to play.
