DENVER, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Clyde Drexler was named Monday as an assisant coach with the Denver Nuggets.

Drexler, who originally came to Denver in September as a special assistant to general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, joins Kim Hughes, John MacLeod and Louie Dampier as assistants to interim coach Mike Evans.

"I believe Clyde will be an excellent addition to the coaching staff," Vandeweghe said. "He adds valuable insight and will be a great resource for the staff and for the players."

Drexler was coach at his alma mater at the University of Houston, posting a 19-39 record in two seasons before he resigned following the 1999-00 campaign.

Drexler, 39, retired from the NBA following the 1997 seasons after playing 15 seasons. He was a 10-time All-Star and ranks 17th in NBA history with 22,195 career points.
