U.S. resumes normal Canadian meat testing

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced resumption Wednesday of normal inspections of Canadian meat and poultry.

In a letter to William Anderson, director of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's meat programs, the FSIS said normal inspections for Listeria monocytogenes and salmonella in ready-to-eat products, including pasteurized egg products, would resume.

However, the FSIS said it would continue increased testing of raw ground beef, raw beef manufacturing trim, boxed beef and subprimals normally sent for grinding for E. coli 0157:H7.

"Testing for E. coli 0157:H7 will proceed at levels to be determined after completion of an analysis of eligible imported beef products from all equivalent countries," the service said.

Increased inspections were ordered this month after unsafe practices were discovered at Ranchers Beef Ltd. in Canada. In its letter to Anderson, the FSIS said it has since determined the unsafe practices at Ranchers Beef weren't employed by other establishments and that corrective actions had been implemented.

Additionally, the FSIS said the increased testing didn't reveal any problems with other Canadian products exported to the United States.

GALAXY COLLIDE NASA
This undated NASA image shows two galaxies that are slowly colliding and possibly, in hundreds of millions of years, only one galaxy will remain. Although it is likely that no stars in the two galaxies will directly collide, the gas, dust and ambient magnetic fields do interact directly. These galaxies, part of the vast Hydra-Centaurus supercluster of galaxies, spans over 100 thousand light-years across and is located about 100 million light-years away.
