Multiple myeloma signaling protein found

Published: Sept. 11, 2007 at 1:02 PM
ATLANTA, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. medical researchers say they have become the first to identify a signaling protein that plays a major role in multiple myeloma.

The scientists at Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute said the mechanism is a critical component in multiple myeloma cell cycle and survival and might lead to a new therapeutic target for treating such cancers.

Multiple myeloma is among the most common hematologic malignancies occurring in patients over 65.

Assistant Professor Jing Chen, postdoctoral fellow Sumin Kang and colleagues report their findings in the September issue of the journal Cancer Cell.
