EPA adds, proposes new Superfund sites

WASHINGTON, March 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added to the list of Superfund sites five hazardous waste areas that pose health and environmental risks.

Superfund is the federal program that investigates and cleans up the most complex uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the nation. The addition of the five sites brings the total number of locations on the list to 1,245.

The EPA is also proposing adding five other sites to the list.

The locations added Wednesday were the Elm Street Ground Water Contamination area in Terre Haute, Ind.; Sonford Products of Flowood, Miss.; the Bandera Road Ground Water Plume, in Leon Valley, Texas; the East 67th Street Ground Water Plume, in Odessa, Texas; and the Lockheed West area in Seattle, Wash.

The sites proposed for inclusion on the list were the Halaco Engineering Company of Oxnard, Calif.; the Eagle Zinc Co. Div T L Diamond, in Hillsboro, Ill.; Eagle Picher Carefree Battery, Socorro, N.M.; the Formosa Mine, Douglas County, Ore., and Five Points PCE Plume, in Woods Cross/Bountiful, Utah.
